St. Joseph Hospital sent some children and teenagers of kidney disease to the 11th Annual Renal Teen Prom on Sunday, Jan. 17, at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks.
In all, more than 250 teenagers — from California and the Southwest — had their makeup done, rode in limos, and ate, all at no cost.
Guests also enjoyed a special surprise — actor Jack Black arrived in a mask and surprised guests with photos, autographs and a special a cappella concert.
For Eileen Mendez, 13, of Santa Ana, this was the first prom she had ever attended. With curly hair, makeup, high heels and a long silver dress donated by St. Joseph, Mendez felt like a princess.
She and her sister Charlene, 22, attended the event together. After meeting Jack Black and riding in a limo, Mendez said that she had a blast and would like to go again next year.
When asked to describe the night, Mendez said, “It was beautiful.”
